This film focuses on the Battle for New Britain. Reel 1, staging areas are set up on a Pacific island. Tents are erected, jungle growth cleared, thatched huts and small bridges constructed with native help, and supplies transported to the area. Reel 2, the troops use artillery, flamethrowers, and small arms in jungle training. Amphibious vessels are used in a practice assault. Masses of materiel are moved from staging areas to beaches and loaded on boats and ships. Generals Douglas MacArthur and Walter Krueger supervise the operation. Reel 3, ships bombard Araive, New Britain. B-25s drop propaganda leaflets. Assault boats land and troops battle the enemy in the jungles. Defenses and communications are set up. Reel 4, wounded are treated in the field and carried to personnel landing craft (LCP's). Naval guns bombard Cape Gloucester. B-25s bomb and strafe the beach as troops come ashore in Higgins boats and fight. Reel 5, patrols inch through the jungle and contact Japanese strong points. Troops and ammunition are unloaded from infantry landing craft (LCI's). Mortars and flame-throwers destroy an enemy position. Amphibious vessels emerge from a tank landing ship (LST) and smash through the jungle. Reel 6, enemy dive bombers sink the destroyer U.S.S. Brownson (DD-518). Survivors are rescued. Supplies are moved through the muddy jungle. Wounded receive surgical care in a field hospital and are loaded aboard LST's.
